On FEB. 5 2008, Deb Lunkas opened the door of her new salon, Shear Madness, in Haymarket Square and was ready for business. “I had worked for over seven years in other salons in the Sylvania area and most of my clients are from this area. This was where I wanted to stay,” she recalled.

Five years later, as she gets ready to celebrate her five-year anniversary, Lunkas credits the loyalty of her clients to the continuing growth of her business. “We put up a large sign on the Haymarket signpost thanking the Sylvania community and our clients for doing business here,” Lunkas said. “My clients are the best,” she added.

“From the very beginning, I wanted to make sure that this salon offered full salon services for the entire family and that the environment reflected that. Through the years, we have worked hard to create an atmosphere that is comfortable, warm and family-friendly,” she said. “In other salons, rigid schedules are in place. But my clients are mostly families, who are more spur of the moment because life is unpredictable. They need to be able to say, ‘basketball practice is cancelled so we can go get a haircut today’. For the most part, I can accommodate them,” she said.

Our clients do say they do like being here and continue to refer others to us. Most of our new clients are referrals from other clients,” she said.

“We also have a good team here. Stylist Annette Reiter joined me a year ago from Mane Attraction and three nail technicians, Gina Kane, Stefane Klocheska and Liz Ronau, formerly of Sandal’s, located here a year and a half ago. “We do have space for one or two additional hair stylists and another nail technician,” Lunkas offered.

Salon hours are Tuesday through Thursday 10 a.m. To 8 p.m. The shop is closed on Sunday and Monday. Walk-ins are welcome, as are appointments.
